Pradaxa Class Action LawsuitBoehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturer of Pradaxa (dabigatran), is facing over 2,000 lawsuits from people who were injured by severe bleeding and other side effects. Plaintiffs accuse the company of failing to properly warn doctors about the risk of bleeding and Pradaxa’s lack of a reversal agent. If you were injured, contact Schmidt & Clark, LLP to learn more about a Pradaxa class action lawsuit.

Safety Risks of Pradaxa

Pradaxa (dabigatran) was originally intended to replace warfarin, the standard blood-thinning drug for over 50 years. Pradaxa is a once-daily pill, which is easier to use and requires less patient monitoring than warfarin. Today, Pradaxa is rapidly replacing warfarin for the prevention of blood clots and stroke.

Clinical trials have indicated that the safety risks of Pradaxa and warfarin are comparable. However, there are some important differences. When internal bleeding events occur in a patient on warfarin, they can be counteracted with a dose of Vitamin K. With Pradaxa, there is no such antidote. Only several hours of dialysis can reverse its blood-thinning effects, which may be too long in an emergency.

Pradaxa Lawsuits Centralized in Federal Court

More than 2,000 Pradaxa lawsuits filed at the federal level have been centralized in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL) for coordinated pre-trial proceedings. The MDL is overseen by Judge David R. Herndon in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. The first trials are scheduled to begin in August 2014, but could be pushed back if lawyers negotiate settlement agreements.

Pradaxa Side Effects

  • Internal bleeding
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Cerebral hemorrhage
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Esophageal ulcers
  • Kidney failure
  • Disability
  • Death

What is the problem?

Schmidt & Clark, LLP is a nationally recognized class action law firm. However, our lawyers are not pursuing a Pradaxa class action lawsuit. Thousands of lawsuits have already been filed, but these are not part of a class action. Instead, they are centralized in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL). If you decide to file an individual Pradaxa lawsuit, you may be eligible to join this litigation or file a claim in the state where you live.

About Class Action Lawsuits

Most people are familiar with high-profile class action lawsuits involving thousands of people. Usually, a class action is filed by a small group of plaintiffs — the “class representatives” — on behalf of a much larger group of plaintiffs who are not named in the lawsuit. This type of litigation makes sense when each individual’s potential payout is less than the cost of individual litigation.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Pradaxa Class Action Lawsuit

Class actions are useful in certain circumstances, but they can have disadvantages for large pharmaceutical product liability litigation. Members can be forced into “low-ball settlements” with high attorneys’ fees.

At Schmidt & Clark, LLP, we believe everyone who was injured by Pradaxa deserves the opportunity to have his or her day in court. Pradaxa injuries are extremely serious, as are the allegations against Boehringer Ingelheim. We believe victims of Pradaxa deserve individual legal representation to fight for maximum compensation on their behalf. This is why we are filing individual lawsuits as opposed to a Pradaxa class action lawsuit.
